Biography

About Dr Jonathan.

Jonathan is an expert in cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), cardiac CT and the full range of thoracic imaging. He has built his career around the questions that imaging is genuinely good at answering — and the ones it is not.

He trained at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 2008 as the Ettels Scholar — the most distinguished graduate of his year — with the Leslie Gold Medal in Medicine and the Annadale Gold Medal in clinical surgery, alongside a First Class Honours intercalated degree in Experimental Pathology. He completed Academic Foundation Training in Edinburgh and South East Scotland before moving to Bristol for specialist training in clinical radiology, where he also completed a PhD in cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging at the Bristol Heart Institute and University of Bristol.

He undertook further advanced fellowship training in cardiothoracic imaging at Toronto General Hospital and the University of Toronto — one of the leading centres in the world for this work. Since 2018 he has been a Consultant Cardiothoracic Radiologist at the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust, where he leads the non-invasive cardiac imaging service and the department's research programme. He is also an honorary senior lecturer in the Department for Health at the University of Bath.

Jonathan holds several national positions, including guidelines and standards lead for the British Society of Thoracic Imaging, NIHR imaging workforce committee member, professional learning and development committee member at the Royal College of Radiologists (thoracic lead), and cardiac workstream lead for the UK Imaging and Oncology congress.

He is actively involved in multicentre cardiothoracic imaging research, with over 75 original peer-reviewed publications to his name, and his current research focuses on the application of artificial intelligence tools to medical imaging. At Checkpoint, his role is straightforward — every scan in your assessment is read by a working consultant, and on cardiac and thoracic imaging that consultant is Jonathan.
